How we make money
We plan to pay for the site with affiliate links. When you buy a lab test or a treatment product through one of those links, the lab or store may pay us a commission. You don't pay anything extra.
Our first affiliate links are live with iSpring, on a few pages where one of its products fits the problem and its certification backs that up. Every one of those links sits in a box that says it pays us. Other buttons, like "See lab tests" or "See our picks," still lead to our own guides.
A commission won't change what we recommend
We pick the test or the treatment that fits the problem first, using guidance from the EPA, the CDC and university extension services. Then we look for a place to buy it. If a lab or store pays more, that doesn't move it up the list.
We'll tell you when a free option exists
Many states and counties test wells for free or at low cost. When we know of a program like that, we tell you about it first, even though we earn nothing from it.
We'll tell you when a link pays us
Pages with affiliate links say so near the top, and each link has a note beside it that links back to this page.
We only name certifications we checked ourselves
Store pages often claim certifications a product doesn't have. Before we name one, we look the product up on the certifier's own listing (NSF, WQA or IAPMO). If a product isn't certified for the problem on the page, we say so next to the link.
We'll pay for anything we review
If we review test kits or filters, we'll buy them ourselves. Companies won't see a review before it's published.
